On a drive out to Oak Point one spring day, I was taking in the view and
the colours of late afternoon when this pair swam through the scene.
Red-breasted Mergansers are ducks that dive for fish and clasp them with
the serrated edges of their bills, giving them the nickname of
"sawbill". They are often found in coastal waters (from Cornell). I
first saw them on a field trip along the coast with Nature Miramichi
years ago. They were an inspiring subject for a painting.
