Vantage Point -- Osprey (detail)
These large raptors are fascinating to watch as they hover over rivers and seacoasts in search of fish. When they spot their prey, they plunge in dramatic fashion, capturing the prize in their talons. Then they fly with the fish facing forward to cut down on wind resistance. I had many opportunities this past summer to observe them tending to their young atop high poles in Shippagan, and scouting for fish in Barnaby River, Escuminac and Cap-Lumière, NB. I enjoyed trying to capture their fierce, somewhat deranged look in this painting.
